MyHeritage app is gaining popularity on social media for its deep nostalgia feature. It claims video re-enactment using deep learning technology to animate the faces of still image and create high-quality, realistic video. Remini app is also offering a similar feature along with some other photo enhancing features. These features are good until it crosses the boundaries.

Deepfake technology has already gained so many concerns with regards to spreading misinformation. Deepfake uses AI-based technology to manipulate media to make them seem authentic and real. Deepfakes are a threat in many ways e.g., spreading fake videos of politicians, creating non-consensual pornography, etc. Though, some fields can get benefit from deepfakes. The film industry can utilize this technology to recreate deceased actors and edit videos without the need of reshooting.

To utilize the technology in positive sense, there are requirements of laws & regulations to criminalize non-consensual deepfakes. Further, there is a growing research demand to identify such deepfake media. An AI-based frame-by-frame analysis could be useful to identify real vs fake media.
